Judging Process
The expertise and commitment shown by Regional and National judges is superb and helps make the BCO Awards one of the most rigorous and, therefore, worthwhile in the property industry. A big thank you is due to all the National and Regional judges from the BCO. It is a great privilege to serve on these panels. Judges aim to be a member for three years and each year one or two panel members change, which keeps a vitality and freshness flowing and enables other BCO members to join in as judges.
The key criteria in the evaluation of each entry as a workplace will be sustainability (socially, economically and environmentally), effectiveness as a place to do business and the degree to which others could benefit by adopting ideas from the project into future work.
In making their assessment the judges will, amongst other factors, assess:
- Originality of concept and innovation in execution
- Effectiveness and performance as a workplace
- Quality of design and construction
- Value for money, enterprise and flexibility
- Civic impact and social responsibility
- Appropriateness of specification
- Energy and Sustainability
- Impact on environment
- Use of BCO Best Practice Guides
It is recognised that the opportunities and challenges set by each development are different and diverse. A key question for the judges will therefore be whether the applicant team has made the best of the circumstances presented to them.
A BCO Award is the gold standard of excellence and awarded following a rigorous judging process that involves entrants hosting visits from regional and national panels.
Always evolving, last years Awards introduced an award for innovation that was won by the National Trust for their Heelis building and this year the small fit out category has been reframed to include all 'small projects' below 20,000 ft2.
Winning an award is a great testament to a clients vision and tenacity and a huge reward for the work of their team. It is also a particular opportunity for new talent to show itself in the 'commercial market'.
As judges we look forward to your entries, which are rigorously judged against all the criteria. Whilst judging at a regional and national level is a serious time commitment it is extraordinarily rewarding as well as perhaps the best CPD any professional could hope for. Good luck.
